Choosing a subject is often the most difficult thing to do, especially when you are uninspired or even confused. There will be times that you have so many ideas in mind that it becomes hard to choose a single one to work on.

There will also be times when your mind simply is as blank as a white canvas. Well, it helps to think about a subject that you love the most or something that you have a deep connection with. Think of something that interests you – landscapes, flowers and gardens, animal portraits, or even abstract.

However, you also have to consider your skill in painting. For example, painting landscapes is one of the simpler ways to learn how to paint with watercolor, because the paintbrush strokes do not have to be rigidly controlled. On the other hand, animal portraits are usually for the more advanced painter, since they require a little more knowledge of how to blend colors and capture shadows correctly.

You can make a list of your options, and even put painting ideas down on paper. Gather watercolor painting ideas from the world you live in, or even as you travel around the globe. There’s no rule that says you can use an idea only once. You can always use an old painting and make some variations from it. You can even paint the same thing over and over on different mediums. It’s all a matter of creativity.

But if you really want some new ideas and your mind is as blank as a white canvas, there’s no harm in trying to seek suggestions from other people, or to expand your knowledge of the history of painting, and work from there.
